Soothing Syrup Recipe
By Integrative Pediatrician Dr. Julie Sweeney
At SproutWell Integrative Pediatric Medicine, we embrace a holistic approach to pediatrics that goes beyond conventional approaches to care. One of our favorite recipes is this botanical cough syrup crafted with the goodness of fresh thyme, lemon, and honey – a comforting blend drawn from the healing power of nature. This recipe was adapted from the work of Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, a renowned integrative physician and herbalist whose teachings on the healing power of plants continue to guide and inspire us.
Try this herbal syrup as an alternative to over-the-counter cough remedies for your child as a refreshing way to battle this cough and cold season.
SproutWell Soothing Syrup
6 sprigs of fresh thyme
1 cup of water
¼ cup of honey (No honey if infant is under 1 year. Use maple syrup instead.)
1 tsp lemon juice
Pour near boiling water over fresh thyme sprigs. Cover and let steep for 7-10 minutes. Strain and then stir in honey (or maple syrup) and lemon. Let cool.
Children: 1-2 tsp every 2-3 hours
Teens/adults: 1-2 tbsp every 2-3 hours
*Do not use thyme essential oil. Caution if allergic to plants in the mint family and discuss with your doctor if you or your child have a medical condition or are pregnant.
